Teaching Young Kids effectively is never an easy task. Educators around the world follow a wide range of practices trying to figure out how children as young as three can be engaged in fruitful learning. Since every child is unique, one size fits all should not be the approach of a good educator. As all parents and educators will agree, even a few months at this stage is a giant step in growth in the life of a human being and paces of development may vary. That is why it is imperative that we as responsible adults use this short period most effectively.
Children who are exposed to a wide range of information in their early years, grow up smart ......that is, excel in academics. Learning becomes fun as they begin to show a greater interest in various topics.
When the child is 4 yrs old or more...
Introduce the natural world to young children. You will see how fascinated they are when they learn about all kinds of creatures and living things. This is a most wonderful way to create an awareness about the world around us and to gradually lead them to develop an interest in nature and the sciences.
A typical class would begin like this...
Tell me who has seen a Lion?
There'd be many hands raised in a class or if you are teaching a single child, he or she would show interest.
Ask the child to describe the animal. Help with gestures and words of encouragement and remember to smile a lot. Ask questions as cues for the child to speak and then wait for responses....
Is the lion a small or a big animal?
Does it have a mane?
Do you know how it walks?
Do you think it is dangerous?
Where does it live?
Supply words like wild, graceful, mane of hair around its face, roars, etc. It is important to explain the meaning of each word with actions so that the child forms a clear picture in his/her mind. Memorizing facts must always be the last step in the learning process.
Many such words are supplied in this blog for readers to use.
Describe how different birds and animals look, their natural characteristics, foods, habitats and how they breed. Use pictures and videos to discuss about them. Encourage them to ask as many questions as they like. Compare different birds and animals to give them a better idea about them.
E,g. If you are telling them about penguins, you can say that although they are birds, they are far bigger than crows and maybe as big as a young human child.
Creating comparisons help them to ask you more questions. This is an excellent way to feed their natural curiosity and in the process help them pick up new words and form sentences. As they learn to express themselves more easily using a wider range of words, they become confident.
